No one asked if he prays

"I am...  a searcher"

-- Edward O. Wilson

This three hour interview with the noted sociobiologist covered a broad array of topics in which he was as sharp as ever.  Dr. Wilson noted that the biggest disagreements over worldview perspectives have to do with how it all began (creationism) and whether there is intervention in the world from an outside force, but that otherwise we have a remarkable commonality among us that allows for working together in many ways and on which we ought to focus our energies. He expressed appreciation for the evangelical tradition from which he came because it encourages a questioning perspective.

When asked if he was an atheist, Wilson answered "no" but he did not express belief in God either, and also explicitly denied that God's existence is unknowable.  He rather considers himself a "searcher."  He also believes that our tribal tendencies are strong and will keep us from ever reaching true unity on fundamental issues such as religion.  But he noted that we should not blame the excesses of our tribal tendencies on religion.

As Dr. Wilson already knows if he gives it a second thought, Jesus reinforced the Old Testament tradition when he succinctly summarized it in the principle, "Seek and you will find."  The Old Testament had embedded this principle in the story of a specific people in specific circumstances, but Jesus announced this as good news for everyone.  The point is you get what you want.
